The NTSB Safety Assessment

The National Transportation Safety Board is a large aerospace industry that has affected millions across America. As stated by the NTSB (n.d.), they are an independent federal agency charged by Congress with investigating every civil aviation accident in the United States and significant events in the other modes of transportation—cars, boats, planes, etc. Regarding their impact on the aviation industry, the NTSB plays a valuable role when it comes to accident investigation. When accidents occur, they work directly with the FAA, where they can “determine the probable causes of the accidents and events they investigate and issue safety recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences” (NTSB, n.d., Who We Are and What We Do section). With the NTSB being capable of providing such valuable intel into the aviation industry, it allows accidents that are determined to be analyzed further so that these events do not take place in the future. With safety being a top priority in aviation, ...

Technology Affecting Human Factors

Technology Affecting Human Factors           As time has progressed, technology has skyrocketed into our society. Every day, no matter where we are, there is some form of technology we are using, from lights to AC, and we rely on technology to help us through our everyday lives. The use of technology enables us to achieve specific problems or goals more easily, alleviating the work required to accomplish them and making our lives simpler and more accessible. As stated by Microsoft Copilot (n.d.), technology is an integral part of modern existence as it is reshaping entire industries and societal norms. In the aviation industry, technology has grown exponentially as more tools and devices are introduced to help pilots navigate the skies and fly. Furthermore, with the growth of these technologies, while it may make the job of pilots flying in the sky easier, it causes short cuts that utterly lead to human factors such as fatigue and complacency that inevitabl...

Putting Aviation Safety Publications Into Practice

FAA Should Modernize its Safety Practices to Manage Emerging Hazards and Support Adoption of New Technologies   In the article above, the National Academies (2024) discuss how the Federal Aviation Administration should update its methods for ensuring commercial aviation safety so that the agency can better evaluate and regulate new and innovative concepts for aviation operations and technologies. Continuing on that thought, these ideas should be moved forward in order to help increase the safety in commercial aviation. As new technologies arise, it aleviates some of the work and stress pilots deal with, such as autopilot, as discussed in the article, which helps pilots do things as they fly. The automation helps pilots when it comes to flying, eyeing traffic, as well as weather, all inside the cockpit, which can help alleviate some of the stress. However, with the automation in cockpits, it can dull the senses of pilots as they get comfortable relying on the equipment they have bee...
